The National working committee of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) has summoned a meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) to discuss the health of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua currently undergoing medical attention in far away Saudi Arabia.
The meeting holds at the Party’s national Secretariat Abuja and may deliberate on the way forward in the event of the President’s absence from office. The President has been rumoured as likely to arrive the country this week.
As the nation prays for his quick recuperation , People’s Democratic Party bigwigs are intensifying their prayers in the event of many having put their professional credibility and political careers on line to claim the president was only slightly indisposed and fit to carry on his position as the President.
From today’s emergency NEC meeting, reference for the state of health of the President according to PDP definition may change in texture.
Events of the president’s state of health have forced many party topshots to put their moral credibility and professional ethics on line in an apparent face-saving effort to allay fears of a deteriorating condition of the president’s health. There might be a more realistic views today as the nation has voiced out that she had been fooled by the president’s cronies.
It is almost three weeks and events have proved that what the political errand workers are presenting about the president condition is far from the truth after it has emerged that American and German experts are being invited to Saudi Arabia to assist and ensure the president survive his current health dilemma.
A source said: “ The situation as they are today cannot be represented to be a state of slight indisposition as portrayed and already the credibility of those credited to such statement has been seriously put to question”.
“It has been a disgraceful face saving efforts in attempts by PDP top echelons to retain the status quo. There had been a more ambition seeking pursuit at the expense of the president’s health. It is unfortunate” said a political analyst.
Civil right activist and professional ethic defenders may be seeking injunctions against the authors of such statements such as ‘the president was fit to govern and that he was only slightly indisposed’ as they are meant to deceive the entire citizens of Nigeria..
As the entire world watches events relating to the president’s health unfolding, Nigeria’s leadership credibility seem to be on line and unless the presidents condition improves drastically soon, the leaders’ sense of judgement would be seriously put to question.
Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Action Congress National Secretary last week deplored a claim by PDP National Legal adviser, Chief Olushola Oke that the president was slightly indisposed.
Mohammed decried that the legal adviser was insincere in a matter that endangers the future of the country.
In recent times, United States of America through the foreign secretary, Mrs. Hillary Clinton has expressed concern over the states of the nation in Nigeria as the President lay sick in King Faihd Specialist Hospital in Saudi Arabia.
However, in another development, it was reiterated on Wednesday that the President Umaru Yar’Adua, is responding to treatment after his heart operation.
Dora Akunyili, Information Minister in a press briefing said only his doctor can say when he will return.
“He (Yar’Adua) is responding to treatment. It is only his doctor that can determine or say when he will come back,” the Minister told journalists after a weekly cabinet meeting.
“I can confirm to you that Mr President is still in a Saudi hospital,” she said without giving further details.
Vice President Goodluck Jonathan, other officials, the ruling PDP party and Yar’Adua’s doctor have also in the past days made similar statements to douse the anxiety of many Nigerians over his state of health since he left the country for Saudi Arabia more than two weeks ago.
Yar’Adua is hospitalised at King Faisal hospital in Jeddah for acute pericarditis, an inflammation of the membrane covering the heart.
Yar’Adua’s personal doctor, Salisu Banye, in a statement on November 26, disclosed that he is suffering from acute pericarditis.
Before then, the condition of Yar’Adua, 58, had been cloaked in an official veil of secrecy.
It is his third trip to the Red Sea port in as many months, all believed to have involved in hospital consultations.
He is widely believed to have a history of kidney-related disease for which he has previously received hospital treatment in both Germany and Saudi Arabia.
